If you’re considering getting married in Tasmania, you have come to the right place. Defined by rugged coastlines, serene bush walks and spectacular mountain scenery, Tassie is a great choice for couples who like to do things a little differently.
As a marriage celebrant, I love helping couples find their dream location. From elopements to large-scale weddings, it’s so important to get the location right. Of course, with so many options out there, it can all be a bit overwhelming. To make your decision easier, I have rounded up some of the most unique wedding venues in Tasmania.
From quirky hotels to your neighbour’s backyard, there’s something for all budgets and styles. So let’s dive in!
Elopements
If you’re looking for an intimate ceremony minus the stress, elopements are a wonderful choice. That’s what I did! I’m a big fan of elopements because it allows couples to focus on each other, rather than all of the guests.
When it comes to elopements in Tasmania, there are tons of options. From far-flung remote landscapes to luxury hideouts, these venues offer the chance to disconnect from the world and enjoy your big day.
The Keep, Goulds Country
Nothing quite says elopement like The Keep; a calm oasis perched on a 650-metre rock, with 360-degree views of Tasmania’s North-East coast. Built with seclusion and privacy in mind, The Keep is the perfect place to relax.
The secluded location makes it an excellent choice for elopements. The team is on hand to craft the ultimate celebration for you and your partner. As the sun goes down, stay the night in a luxury room and sink into an outdoor boulder bathtub for an evening of stargazing.
The Hide, Bruny Island
Say your vowels from the comfort of your private retreat at The Hide in Sheepwash Bay. Located directly on the shores of Bruny Island, this is a great choice for couples who want to get away from it all. With an outdoor shower, a panoramic bathtub and a large, beautiful deck, allowing you to escape the daily grind and reconnect with nature.
For elopements, The Hide offers 37 acres of pebble beaches and enchanting woodland. When the day is done, you’ll get to snuggle up in your private retreat – just the two of you.
Crayshack, Flinders Island
With a population of 800, Flinders Island is one of those magical places where you can summit mountains one day and relax on the beach the next. Top it off with vineyards, diamond mining and gourmet cuisine for one unique getaway.
At the Crayshack, you can get married right on the beach of this dreamy island. This cosy little shack is set along Killiecrankie Beach and comes with three bedrooms, an outdoor bathroom, kitchen, BBQ and a firepit. With extensive sea views, the Crayshack provides a stunning backdrop for your big day.
The Bowmont, Franklin
Tucked away in the village of Franklin, The Bowmont is a charming property within the sleepy village of Franklin. Rich in history, it offers accommodation in the bank manager’s former residence (fully renovated of course!) There’s also a photography studio and kitchen for private events and special occasions.
Legals only
A Legals Only wedding is designed for couples who want a small celebration with limited guests. If you’re looking for a legal-only venue in Tasmania, there are plenty of options. From restaurants to outdoor locations, there’s something for everyone.
Sonny, Hobart
A local wine bar with laid-back vibes, Sonny is a lovely place to celebrate with friends and family. Located in Hobart, this popular bar has a tasty menu of sharing plates and homemade pasta dishes. It’s set up well for intimate dinners after the ceremony.
The Empire Hotel, Queenstown
Standing tall since 1901, The Empire Hotel has a longstanding history that dates back to the mining era. Great if you’re looking to add some character to your wedding, this hotel has 24 rooms and a lovely restaurant. Located close to Queenstown’s biking tracks, it’s a great choice for couples who want to get married outdoors, followed by a delicious feast back at the hotel.
Echo Sugarloaf State Reserve, Randall’s Bay
One of my personal favourites, Echo Sugarloaf State Reserve is a 4.8-mile loop track near Randall’s Bay. As a marriage celebrant, I once led a ceremony on top of a hill here and it was a truly amazing experience. With so many beautiful photography spots, it’s a great choice for adventurous couples who like to be out in nature.
The Waterloo Swansea
For a fun 70s/80s-themed wedding, The Waterloo Swansea ticks all the boxes. Set right along the east coast of Tasmania, in Swansea, this hotel offers affordable beachfront weddings. With just 28 rooms, it’s small enough for an intimate wedding but also handy if you have a few extra guests. The hotel also has a big reputation for good, hearty food with an ever-changing menu of locally grown ingredients.
Weddings
For a wedding with all the bells and whistles, Tasmania has plenty of options. Just because you have a bigger wedding, with lots of guests, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be different. Once you’ve found the right wedding venue, you’ll be able to put your own mark on it. And so you should!
A family member or friend’s paddock
Nothing quite beats a backyard wedding. Great for festival-inspired weddings, this option offers something truly unique. Perhaps you know someone with a paddock or maybe you just want to get married on your turf. Either way, this is the type of wedding venue that will keep people talking for years to come.
The Hanging Gardens, Hobart
A landmark in its own right, The Hanging Gardens is an iconic wedding venue in Tasmania. With six venues to choose from, it caters to weddings of all sizes. The Cathedral is a sheltered outdoor space with a trendy atmosphere, while The Garden is an enchanting area adorned in hanging baskets. For something different, there’s also a Broadway-style theatre. When it comes to food, the venue serves up a diverse range of cuisine from Italian to Mexican dishes. Need I go on?
Henry Jones Art hotel, Hobart
For city dwellers, the Henry Jones Art Hotel is a chic and sophisticated property with an artistic flair. Located in the city’s old waterfront warehouses, it was crowned Australia’s first art hotel in 2004. As a wedding venue, it has five event spaces including a large atrium and an art installation suite for private dining.
Willie Smiths, Grove
Just 25 25-minute drive from Hobart, in the Huon Valley, Willie Smith’s is an organic apple orchard and distillery. Located within the orchard lies The Apple Shed, a rustic venue with a beautiful lawn area and an indoor museum. Suitable for weddings big and small, The Apple Shed offers a unique charm surrounded by green pastures. When it’s time to eat, you and your guests will enjoy mouthwatering dishes washed down with Willie Smith’s very own cider!
La Sardina Loca, Hobart
If you love Spanish culture and cuisine, then you’ll also love La Sardina Loca – a hip restaurant in Hobart’s CBD. With stables, a courtyard and two private dining rooms, it is a standout choice for a full-scale wedding. The best part? Your guests will be very well fed.
How to find the perfect wedding venue
When it comes to finding a wedding venue, it’s important to choose what’s right for YOU. While you may be inundated with recommendations, what works for one couple may not work for another. Do some research, read testimonials, ask lots of questions and visit the venue beforehand (if you can). Other things to take into consideration are capacity, budget, availability and inclusions.
Most importantly, stay true to yourselves. If you’re looking for a wedding venue in Tasmania, find a space that feels authentic and represents you as a couple. From low-key ceremonies on the beach to luxury hotel weddings, be sure to find something that you’re both happy with.
As a marriage celebrant, I love unique wedding venues. The more out-of-the-box, the better!
Wherever you decide to host your wedding in Tassie, I’ll be there!
